Well, that's the new way of handling presentation layer from the so-called model layer in a Flex 4 component. It's a separation of code where in the MXML file you have the visual elements, and on the Actionscript class you have the logic of the components. It might be too much for the main application, but as your code gets bigger and more components are added, some orchestration between them will most probably happen in the main file. So having the visual elements apart of the logic is a good thing. Using it for a simple example like this might be too much yea. But then it's good that it triggers discussions like this.

Why is it necessary to build up the skin? Why couldn't this all just be done in the main application tags? Is there a different way to componentize this to use it with MXML?

"The two base components that support layout inside the Flex 4 SDK are:

1. GroupBase, ...

2. SkinnableDataContainer...
"

I think SkinnableContainer also supports layout. As an example , you can specify a layout for the Application or Panel component which both inherit from SkinnableContainer

I'm too interested in flex + spring dm + dm server + maven: I've been able to build a skeleton project (that is: application layers with some dummy service but yet no Flex UI) but I'm gettings "conflicting imports" errors when deploying on the server (dm server 1.0.2).

Did you ever found such a problem? See http://forum.springsource.org/showthread.php?t=76587 for more details.

Ps: could you post you maven POM(s)?
